Located on the north-fork of Long Island, the passive house certified artist studio uses aged timber to conceal the insulated walls of the building. The building faced several challenges due to the north-facing glass exposure and a small single-story plan.
Nevertheless, the design features a southern wall (Trombe wall) that was built with thermal panels that offer a distribution of heat into the interior during cold months (and blocks out heat during warm months). The construction features new materials that are predominately used in Europe but may soon become more prevalent in the United States.
